New Jersey Lawmakers Take First Step Toward Possible Ban On Vaping Products

I’LL TELL YOU WHEN WE HEAD RIGHT BACK TO THE UPPER 80S COMING UP. UKEE AND JESS BACK TO YOU. SEE YOU IN A BIT. THANK YOU. CRACK DOWN ON VAPING, NEW JERSEY LAWMAKERS TOOK THE FIRST STEP AS THEY TOOK A STEP ON VAPING PRODUCTS. DEATHS AND ILLNESSES NATIONWIDE, GOVERNOR MURPHY MADE HIS OPPOSITION CLEAR. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER KIMBERLY DAVIS HAS MORE ON HIS PLAN AND WHY EVERYONE IS NOT ON BOARD. KIMBERLY? Reporter: UKEE AND JESSICA, NEW JERSEY IS CURRENTLY DEALING WITH THREE SEVERE LUNG RELATED ILLNESSES AND IT’S ALSO INVESTIGATING 19 OTHER CASES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN CONNECTED TOLL VAPING, AT LEAST FOR NOIR. BUT GOVERNOR MURPHY IS ADVISING RESIDENTS TO STOP VAPING UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. STATE OFFICIALS WILL BEGIN LOOKING INTO VAPE SHOPS, INCLUDING TRACKING DOWN ILLEGAL VAPE PRODUCTS THAT HAVE BEEN TAMPERED WITH ON THE BLACK MARKET. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE BUYING DEVICES OFF THE STREET OR THROUGH BLACK MARKETS. AND IT SHOULD NEVER BE USED BY YOUTH, YOUNG ADULTS, AND PREGNANT WOMEN. IN A PRESS CONFERENCE THURSDAY, GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY ANNOUNCED THAT A TASK FORCE HAS BEEN CREATED TO COME UP WITH A SET OF RECOMMENDATIONS BY OCTOBER 3RDRD. OUR STATE’S DIVISION OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS HAS DEMANDED INFORMATION FROM 15 E-CIGARETTE BUSINESSES. THAT INCLUDES JUUL, THE NATION’S LARGEST E-CIGARETTE MANUFACTURER, AS WELL AS EON SMOKE A COMPANY BASED IN NEW JERSEY. Reporter: LAWMAKERS AND STATE OFFICIALS SAY THEY’RE TARGETING VAPE MANUFACTURERS WHO ARE MAKING ITS PRODUCTS APPEALING TO CHILDREN WITH UNIQUE FLAVORS, BUT VAPOR ADVOCATES DISAGREE. NO YOUTH SHOULD VAPE BUT TO KEEP DEADLY CIGARETTES LEGAL ON THE MARKET WHILE REMOVING HARM-REDUCTION PRODUCTS SIMPLY DOESN’T MAKE SENSE. WE KNOW THAT OVER 2.5 MILLION EX SMOKERS HAVE BEEN CREATED IN AMERICA BECAUSE OF VAPING. AND WE SHOULDN’T OVERREACT TO ILLNESSES AND DEATHS THAT ARE CLEARLY BEING CAUSED BY CONTAMINATED THC CARTRIDGES SOLD BY DRUG DEALERS. AS LAWMAKERS WEIGHED ON THE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE TASK FORCE, VAPOR ADVOCATES SAY THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER SOLUTION. SMOKERS SMOKE FROM THE NICOTINE BUT DIE FROM THE TAR AND WE NEED TO GIVE THEM SMARTER OPTIONS BUT ALSO NEED TO DO MORE WORK TO KEEP THESE OUT OF THE HANDS OF YOUTH. VAPOR ADVOCATES FEAR IF THIS TYPE OF LEGISLATION PASSES THERE WILL BE AN UPTICK OF ILLEGAL VAPOR PRODUCTS ON THE BLACK MARKET.
